LG MOBILE PHONES OFFERS PARENTS A BREAKTHROUGH "REPLY" TO MOBILE PHONE MISUSE AMONG TEENS

SAN DIEGO, Feb 24, 2010 – LG Electronics MobileComm U.S.A., Inc. (LG Mobile Phones) today introduced LG Text Ed, a multifaceted campaign that provides parents with the know-how and resources they need to promote responsible mobile phone usage among their text-savvy children. Through extensive in-depth research, LG discovered that mobile phone misuse such as sexting, harassment, sending gossipy texts, and forwarding inappropriate images is prevalent among today’s teenage youth. Yet, many parents are still in the dark about the myriad ways kids can misuse their mobile phones.

A first-of-its-kind program among mobile phone manufacturers in the U.S., LG Text Ed includes an advisory council of experts who will provide parents with information on a range of topics—from sexting to phone etiquette to driving while texting—via a new website: www.LGTextEd.com. Building on its highly praised Give It A Ponder viral campaign that targets teens with comedic and lighthearted web-based videos, LG Text Ed will reach parents through a dedicated website and a variety of online and public service type marketing platforms.

Designed to be a one-stop-shop for anyone seeking guidance on text messaging behavior, the LG Text Ed website will house resources from the advisory council such as monthly articles, tips, videos and an interactive question and answer forum. Other tools include www.lgdtxtr.com, a site that allows parents to familiarize themselves with common texting terminology and to decode cryptic text messages their kids may be using.

LG Text Ed Council

LG has formed a council of leading experts who will serve in an advisory capacity to LG and provide materials for the LG Text Ed website on a monthly basis. Recognized and praised for their work with teens and tweens, they include:

• Rosalind Wiseman - Author of the bestselling Queen Bees and Wannabes (the basis for the 2004 movie, Mean Girls) and the young adult novel Boys, Girls, & Other Hazardous Materials. Wiseman is internationally recognized as an expert on children, teens, parenting, social justice, and ethical leadership. She is passionate about her work to raise awareness about today’s social challenges facing tweens and teens, and their parents. In addition to penning a monthly column in Family Circle magazine, Wiseman is the creator of the Owning Up curriculum, designed to challenge students and educators to stand up to social cruelty, degradation and violence.

• Dr. Charles Sophy - a leading psychiatrist specializing in Adult, Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and Family Practice, has dedicated his life to the physical and mental well-being of children and families nationwide. He currently serves as the Medical Director for the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), the nation's largest Child Welfare System. Dr. Sophy was presented with both the Discovery Award from the Zimmer Children's Museum and the Children's Voices Award from the Village Family Services for his tireless commitment to the well-being of his community’s families. In addition to his county position, Dr. Sophy maintains a private practice in Los Angeles and much of his time is spent lecturing across the country to various health care professionals, medical students, social workers and parents. Dr. Sophy is consistently sought after, as the family expert by various media outlets including Larry King Live, the Today Show, Anderson Cooper 360, countless radio programs, on-line and print publications. He maintains a blog on Psychology Today and his own website www.drsophy.com. Dr. Sophy released his book February 3, 2010: Side by Side: The Revolutionary Mother-Daughter Program for Conflict-Free Communication.

• Dr. Joel Haber – A clinical psychologist and parenting expert, Dr. Haber has dedicated more than 20 years to the prevention of abusive behaviors in children and adults. The official bullying consultant to the American Camp Association, Dr. Haber leads popular workshops and conference sessions on bullying, online bullying and violence prevention nationwide. He is also co-founder of Tool Kits for Kids, author of Bullyproof Your Child For Life and founder of the Respect U, a bully prevention and management program used in schools, camps, organizations, sports teams and families.

“With leadership comes responsibility,” said Ehtisham Rabbani, vice president of marketing and innovation for LG Mobile Phones. “Years of research have resulted in LG putting more QWERTY devices in the hands of consumers than any other manufacturer. LG Text Ed is a comprehensive and interactive way for us to bridge the generation gap between parents and teens and play a role in constructive mobile phone use.”

LG Research

To ensure its LG Text Ed campaign provides parents with credible and helpful strategies, LG Mobile Phones conducted research with tweens and teens across the country to gain valuable insights into certain mobile phone behaviors such as sexting, harassment and other practices. Based on their in-depth research, LG discovered that negative mobile behavior is so deeply engrained in teen culture that it often fails to register as negative at all.

LG also learned that a certain group of teens is more likely to engage in negative cell phone behavior than others; the company has classified this group, the “Tabloid Teens.” The youth associated with this term usually belong to an accepted social circle or clique, and use gossip as a form of social currency to further their status among peers. These sensation-craving teens were found to be the perpetrators of this behavior as well as the victims. This is in stark contrast to the widespread belief that bullies single-out those of a perceived lower social status.

From the research, LG realized three key take-aways:

• Negative cell phone behavior is extremely common among teens, and assumes many formats (gossipy texts, embarrassing photos, threats, etc.) Every single respondent interviewed agreed that negative cell phone behavior is common among their peers—a regular part of teen life—and most were able to provide detailed examples.

• Teens don’t call this behavior “bullying”; it differs significantly from traditional bullying, and in fact, teens don’t typically regard it as intentionally hurtful.

• The role of pure “bystander” doesn’t exist: at some point, nearly all teens have been actively engaged in behaviors that bully. Teens readily admit to being “bystanders” to negative cell phone behaviors, and feel little shame about their role in the action, even when they are passively or actively passing along information they receive.

LG is committed to combating these staggering findings with a comprehensive initiative that seeks to equip parents with the best tools to educate themselves and their children. For more information on the LG Text Ed campaign and additional information on mobile phone misuse please visit, www.lgtexted.com. Details of the teen focus campaign Give It A Ponder can be found at www.giveitaponder.com. LG e-reader coming. Kindle, iPad, beware

LG plans to introduce an e-book reader as soon as April this year. According to KW Kim, LG MEA's CEO, the company's e-reader would compete with the Amazon Kindle and the not-yet-available Apple iPad (which, as far as we're concerned, is one of the biggest wastes of time and money in the recent gadget history -- and we hope to see it on a Cracked list soon).

The LG e-reader should be first available in the Middle East and Africa. Pricing details weren't unveiled. Also, LG didn't mention the OS of its e-reader, but Linux is a likely candidate -- although LG might as well opt for Android, just like Barnes & Noble did for its Nook e-reader.

LG has recently showcased a flexible 19-inch e-ink prototype display, as well as a "Solar Cell e-Book", though we don't know if these have anything to do with the upcoming e-reader. But just in case, this is the solar cell e-book:

Verizon Wireless has just launched a new LG clamshell, the LG Accolade VX5600. As we told you before, the Accolade VX5600 is a simple 1xRTT phone, and LG says it's also reliable and easy-to-use, so if you're in the market for such a device, you should check it out.

The Accolade VX5600 is also VZ Navigator capable and Family Locator capable.

Verizon sells the LG Accolade VX5600 for $19.99 with a two-year agreement. You can also buy the phone free of contract, but you'll have to pay $199.99. See the phone here on Big Red's website.

Another LG clamshell that Verizon should launch soon is the LG VX8370 Clout, but we have little info on it at the moment.

The Pop GD510 is the most compact touchscreen phone ever made, measuring 95 x 49.6 x 11.2 mm and weighing 89 grams. The phone has a 3-inch WQVGA touchscreen display and only one button on the front -- which can act as the menu, end and cancel key.

Rogers sells the LG Pop for as low as $19.99 with a contract agreement for three years (you can also get the LG Xenon or the LG Neon for the same price). You can buy the phone online here -- or maybe you're interested in a Pop GD510 review first.

LG GM600 Scarlet II mobile TV phone appears in Brazil

Update: LG Scarlet II GM600 is now available.

The LG GM600 that we've uncovered last December is, indeed, a touchscreen phone, as we assumed, and it's actually the next LG Scarlet for Brazil, logically called LG Scarlet II.

Like the Scarlet KB775 / KB775F, LG GM600 Scarlet II comes with mobile TV capabilities, a 3 Megapixel camera and 3G connectivity. We don't know the display's size and resolution, but 3-inch, 240 x 400 pixels is a good guess.

The GM600 Scarlet II also has a 3.5mm headset jack, Bluetooth, HTML browser, DivX support, Dolby sound, microSD card slot and a 1100 mAh battery. We have yet to discover the phone's price and launch date.

LG GS500 Cookie Plus has 3G, SNS capabilities

The LG Cookie KP500 / KP501 / KP502 (and all its other model numbers) was and still is a very successful phone: more than 10 million units have been sold around the world. SO it's no wonder that LG decided to make the new LG Cookie Plus GS500, which is still a simple and affordable touchscreen phone like the first Cookie, but it comes with some extra features.

The LG Cookie Plus GS500 has quad-band GSM and dual-band HSDPA (900 / 2100) connectivity, a 3-inch WQVGA touchscreen display, accelerometer, a fun, animated graphical interface, music player, FM radio, Bluetooth 2.1, document viewer, 3.15 Megapixel camera and microSD card support.

Social networking sites are easily accessible on the LG Cookie Plus -- sites like Facebook, Flickr, Twitter and others. Moreover, with the LG LiveSquare peer management application, you can keep up with important contacts in a visually dynamic way. The new phone also features Editable Screenshot MMS, which allows you to capture web images, then edit and send them.

LG Cookie Plus will be available starting early March, first in France and Italy. The phone will be launched in more than 40 countries throughout 2010. Other new Cookie touchscreen phones will also be released this year to suit various tastes and ages. Via: LG Press release

LG Mini GD880 steps into the spotlight

LG is good at many things, and one of them is making fashionable phones. The company's newest fashionable handset is the LG Mini GD880 -- which, in case you're interested, has recently been approved by the FCC.

Like the LG GD510 Pop (launched last year), the Mini GD880 has a simple design, but it features a plus of elegance, thanks in no small part to the metallic finish on the top and on the sides. The new phone weighs 92 grams and measures only 102.1 x 47.8 x 10.5 mm -- this allowing LG to present it as the smallest and slimmest 3.2-inch full touchscreen handset on the market.

The display of GD880 Mini is WVGA with a 480 x 854 pixels resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio. Other features include: accelerometer, HSDPA (7.2Mbps), advanced social networking capabilities, A-GPS, WLAN (Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g), push e-mail, HTML web browser, Music player, FM radio, 3.5mm headset jack, 5 Megapixel autofocus camera with face detection, microSD card support, and a 900 mAh battery.

Europe will get the LG Mini GD880 starting March. The phone's price will vary, depending on the market it's launched in.

LG GT350 messaging phone announced

LG GT350 is the latest messaging phone announced by LG -- a new device that resembles the LG KS360 and will probably reiterate its success (the KS360 was sold in more than 5 million units).

The LG GT350 comes with less buttons on the front and more keys on the sliding QWERTY keyboard, which now has 4 rows, unlike the KS360's 3-row keyboard. The new phone also features a 3-inch WQVGA (240 x 400 pixels) full-touch display, Bluetooth, HTML browser, Music player, FM radio, microSD card slot and 3.15 Megapixel camera. We have no info on the phone's connectivity yet, so we don't know if it's a 3G device, or a 2.5G one, like the old KS360.

LG has optimized the interface of GT350 for social networking, including full integration with Facebook, Twitter and the likes. Also, there are dedicated keys on the keyboard, for e-mail, IM and the web browser.

LG GT350 will be available in April across Europe. Other markets around the world will get the phone shortly after. There will be four color versions: black, purple, light silver and aqua blue.

LG KM555e Clubby for Russia, Kazakhstan

The LG KM555 / KM555e is no secret to us. It was officially announced in Ukraine several months ago, and we've even seen a preview of it.

Now the phone is available in Russia and Kazakhstan as LG KM555e Clubby. The handset is named like this because it has lots of music-oriented features (like Dolby Sound and 3.5mm headset jack) and provides access to the LG Music Club service, which includes more than 1 million songs that can be purchased and downloaded.

More features: 3-inch WQVGA touchscreen display, GSM/EDGE connectivity, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, 3.15 Megapixel camera and microSD card support.

The LG Clubby KM555e costs about $330. We've also spotted the phone in Taiwan as LG KM555, and we're sure it will soon be released by Rogers in Canada.

LG GD510 Sun Edition is a greener Pop

LG announced the GD510 Pop in the autumn of 2009, saying that an optional solar back panel for it would be launched later on. The solar panel has been released last month, but it isn't included in the basic LG GD510 package, so you have to pay an extra 34.90 Euros for it (the panel's available in Germany, for example).

However, LG has also launched a GD510 Sun Edition, which, of course, comes with the solar panel included in the box. For the moment, it looks like the LG GD510 Sun Edition is available only in Ukraine -- kind of strange, since Ukraine isn't exactly the sunniest country around.

The features of LG GD510 Sun Edition are the ones you'll find in the GD510 Pop, meaning: 3-inch WQVGA touchscreen display, GSM/GPRS/EDGE, Facebook, MySpace and Twitter apps, Bluetooth, stereo FM radio, 3 Megapixel camera with QVGA video recording, and 49MB of storage space plus microSD card support.

We didn't find any info regarding the price of LG GD510 Sun Edition, but the phone should cost about 200 Euros.

LG GW620 and GT540 bringing Android to Taiwan

Of course, Taiwan already has Android phones, but the GW620 and GT540 will be the country's first Android devices from LG.

LG GW620 will be launched in Taiwan in the second quarter of the year, while the LG GT540 may come shorty after. The LG GW620 runs Android 1.5 and has a 3-inch touchscreen display, plus a sliding QWERTY keyboard. The LG GT540 doesn't feature a QWERTY keyboard, but it will come with Android 2.0.

An LG Windows Mobile smartphone will also be introduced in Taiwan in the coming months.

In related news, LG sold about 8,000 New Chocolate phones (BL40 and BL20) in Taiwan since the handsets were launched in December last year. December was also the month when LG launched the LG GD580 Lollipop in Taiwan, and it looks like the company sold more than 10,000 units until now.

LG X200 notebook hits the FCC

It's not a phone, but it's certainly mobile: the LG X200 notebook (or should we call it netbook?), which also goes by the names of LGX20, XB200, XD200 and XV200.

The FCC has just approved the LG X200 -- it has GSM and HSDPA 850/1900 connectivity, which means that AT&T may offer it soon (the carrier is already selling the X120 netbook from LG).

LG X200 features Windows 7 Starter, a 10.1-inch HD screen with 1366 x 768 pixels, Wi-Fi, 1GB/2GB DDR2, 250GB/320GB HDD, and it's powered by an Intel Atom Pineview CPU at 1.66 Ghz or 1.83Ghz.

The LG X200 should be available starting March. Pricing details aren't available at the moment, but you can see the notebook previewed in this video from NetbookNews:
